USC Stuns No. 2 Ohio State After Postgame Clash Between Lincoln Riley and Buckeyes AD

Lincoln Riley clashed with Ohio State’s athletic director and read a prepared statement to reporters after USC’s upset win over the No. 2 Buckeyes, a dramatic turnaround one week after a blowout loss at Wisconsin.

USC head coach Lincoln Riley had a tense exchange with Ohio State athletic director Ross Bjork and read a combative prepared statement to reporters after the Trojans’ upset win over the No. 2 Buckeyes at the Los Angeles Coliseum.

The win came just a week after USC’s blowout loss in Madison, Wisconsin, a game so poor it fueled widespread speculation that Riley’s tenure in Los Angeles was nearing its end. In that Wisconsin game, Riley’s team scored only seven points — the lowest output of his coaching career — and was outplayed in nearly every phase, including a failed 58-yard field goal attempt into the wind, two interceptions and multiple intentional grounding penalties from quarterback Jayden Maiava, and -17 net rushing yards.

USC’s athletic department had reportedly begun preparing funds that could be used toward Riley’s buyout, rumored at $70 million, as fans speculated about potential replacements.

A Different Team Against Ohio State

Despite that collapse, USC entered Saturday’s game against Ohio State as significant underdogs, even with the Buckeyes starting backup quarterback Luke Fahey. Ohio State, coached by Ryan Day, came in with a top-three defense and star receiver Jeremiah Smith.

USC looked transformed. Freshman Trent Mosley scored on a long touchdown screen pass on the second play of the game. Tight end Mark Bowman had a standout run after a catch, hurdling a defender and breaking tackles. The USC defense forced a turnover and stopped Ohio State on a first-and-goal situation inside the 1-yard line, denying the Buckeyes a touchdown.

Confrontation on the Field

As Ohio State players and staff left the field through the tunnel, Riley attempted to walk through the same area with his family and a security guard. An Ohio State staffer blocked his path, and Bjork was seen gesturing toward Riley and saying something to him. Riley responded with visibly profane language before being allowed through. Video from another angle showed Bjork speaking to Riley as he exited the field, though his words were not clearly audible.

A Pointed Statement

In his postgame news conference, Riley read a prepared statement addressing his program and his commitment to USC, delivered with notably sharper language toward the media than usual.
