Schumer Signals Democratic Oversight Push After Midterm Gains, Trades Barbs With GOP Over Future Investigations

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and other Democrats signaled plans for aggressive congressional investigations after the party gained seats in Tuesday’s midterm election, while Republicans like Rep. Jim Jordan say they anticipated the move.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) used a social media post the morning after Tuesday’s midterm election to signal that Democrats plan to aggressively pursue investigations into Republicans now that the party holds expanded majorities in Congress.

According to results cited by Breitbart News, Democrats won major races in Michigan, Texas, South Carolina, Maine, Iowa, Ohio and Kansas, with votes still being counted in Mississippi and Alaska as of Wednesday morning. Republicans had held a 53-seat Senate majority against Democrats’ 47 seats heading into the election. Democrats are now projected to hold at least 54 seats starting in January.

Schumer, who faced internal pressure within his own party last year, posted a photo of himself grilling, with the faces of political opponents — including President Donald Trump and an image of Vice President JD Vance — overlaid on the food.

“54 seats and counting. And I learned how to grill… these burgers and dogs are fully cooked,” Schumer wrote.

Other Democratic lawmakers posted messages suggesting investigations and subpoenas would follow once the new Congress convenes in January.

“Subpoenas,” Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) wrote.

“Noem, Markwayne, Miller, Homan, Bovino, what’s up? Clear your schedule,” Rep. Delia C. Ramirez (D-IL) wrote.

“Thank you, Mr. President. Our thank you will come in January — with subpoenas,” Rep. Yassamin Ansari (D-AZ) wrote.

Republicans had anticipated the shift

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, told Breitbart News Daily in August that he expected Democrats to return to aggressive oversight tactics if they won back majorities.

“But I think you got to look at the other way more likely in that they will — they say they won’t — but they’re going to impeach the president a third time,” Jordan said at the time.

Jordan, who has said he is seeking the position of House Minority Leader, predicted the effort would run through the Judiciary Committee rather than the Intelligence Committee, which he noted handled a prior impeachment inquiry under then-Chairman Adam Schiff.

“They will go back to the weaponization. They will go after the first family. They will go after business leaders. They will go after everyone in the, you know, various secretaries in the cabinet,” Jordan said. “That’s all coming if they win.”

With Democrats now set to control additional seats in the Senate come January, lawmakers in both parties are signaling that congressional oversight and potential investigations into the Trump administration and its allies are likely to be a central feature of the next session.
