Police in Cebu City, Philippines, said Tuesday that a video recovered as part of the investigation into Thomas Markle Sr. showed minors engaged in sexual activity, and confirmed that the FBI has opened its own inquiry into Meghan Markle’s estranged father.
Authorities said the clip depicted both boys and girls, including Asian and Caucasian minors, but no Filipino children. Police did not say whether Markle Sr. appeared in the footage.
Pmgen Wilson Casueta, acting director of the Philippine National Police, said the investigation is “going in the right direction.” “If there is sufficient evidence and the evidence warrants, we will file a case,” Casueta said.
Casueta also said the FBI and other U.S. authorities are conducting their own investigation and working alongside Philippine law enforcement. He indicated British authorities have not opened a parallel probe, saying, “Only the FBI and US authorities have reached [out] to our Women’s and Children’s Protection Center.”
Casueta said he could not comment on separate reports from last week that Mexican authorities had found child pornography in a storage unit in Mexico.
Those earlier reports, from the Daily Mail, alleged a reporter found books about pedophilia, magazines depicting child sexual abuse, sexually explicit 35mm negatives, seven hard drives and more than 50 videotapes mixed in with family belongings in the unit. The Daily Mail said it reported Markle Sr. to the FBI after making the discovery.
Markle Sr. is currently in the United States. According to the Sun, he has been moved into a Florida care facility for patients with dementia.
Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, has called the allegations against her father “troubling and disturbing,” and has said they are part of the reason she cut off contact with him in order to protect her two children, Archie and Lilibet.
