A black bear broke into an unlocked Subaru in Juneau and became trapped inside the vehicle around 12:30 a.m. Monday, destroying much of the interior before Juneau police managed to free it.
Angela Harkins said a neighbor heard the car’s horn blaring and saw the bear sitting on it, triggering the noise, before calling 911. Responding officers woke the Harkins family to retrieve the car keys, but by then the bear had torn out wiring inside the vehicle, and the doors would no longer unlock using the key.
“He actually puts his paw on the window at one point before the officer opens the door,” Harkins said. “JPD was using a rope to pull open the door so that they could get it out.”
Video sent to Alaska’s News Source shows the bear moving around inside the car and the moment officers used a rope to pull the door open, allowing the animal to escape. The car’s interior was left heavily damaged, though neither the bear nor any people were injured in the incident.
