The White House has lashed out at Natalie Maines, frontwoman of The Chicks, calling her a “despicable nobody” after she took a shot at President Donald Trump during a concert in Manhattan this week.
“Natalie Maines is a despicable nobody who clearly suffers from a severe case of Trump Derangement Syndrome that has rotted her peanut-sized brain,” the White House told Fox News Digital.
Maines made the remarks as she kicked off The Chicks’ anniversary tour for their album “Taking the Long Way” in Manhattan, performing alongside bandmates Emily Strayer and Martie Maguire. During the show, she revisited the controversy that followed her 2003 criticism of then-President George W. Bush, this time turning the comparison toward Trump.
According to Billboard, Maines told the crowd she would “never” bow to critics who tell her to “shut up and sing.”
“We thought that was the worst it could get,” she said, referring to the 2003 backlash. “Now I’d give George (W.) Bush a big wet kiss. ‘Cause now we’re ashamed the president of the United States is from the United States.”
The line echoed her original 2003 remark about Bush: “Just so you know, we do not want this war, this violence, and we’re ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas.” That comment sparked a major backlash against the band at the time.
Reaction to Maines’ latest comments has been divided on social media. Some fans said they came to the concert for the music, not political commentary.
“Kind of tired of this political rant… get on with your music which I love,” one person wrote on Instagram.
“Spent $1500 for a ticket to see a concert with wonderful music. Did not want to hear politics,” another wrote.
Others defended the band’s decision to speak out.
“It was the correct thing to say back then and is definitely the correct thing to say now. Bravo Chicks,” one commenter wrote.
“The chicks are on the right track,” another said.
This is not the first time Maines has drawn a sharp response from the White House. In May, she posted a profanity-laced message on Instagram accusing Trump of undermining democracy.
“Our democracy is disappearing right before our eyes. This fugly slut is using your gas money to pay the insurrectionists. But don’t worry about it. I’m sure posting selfies will fix everything.”
She added at the time that an earlier post using the same description of Trump had been removed, and urged followers to repost her new message.
The White House responded to that post with the identical statement it issued this week, calling Maines a “despicable nobody” suffering from “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”
A representative for Maines did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
