Vice President JD Vance addressed the federal investigation into Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., on Tuesday, a day after Homeland Security Investigations agents searched her Washington, D.C.-area home. Speaking from the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews, Vance said he had no advance knowledge of the search and argued that investigators should follow the evidence rather than a political agenda.
“We try to let the law follow the facts, rather than creating facts just to prosecute people we don’t like,” Vance said. “There are some serious allegations against Ilhan Omar. We’re going to look into those. If there’s a real case there, we’re going to follow the facts. If there’s not a real case there, then we won’t.”
His comments came in direct response to Omar’s own account of the search. She has accused the administration of trying to “target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement,” a characterization echoed by House Democrats who have called the investigation politically motivated.
Federal officials have confirmed that the search warrant executed at Omar’s residence was judicially authorized as part of an ongoing criminal investigation. According to media reports, investigators are examining whether immigration paperwork filled out by her late father, when Omar was a child, involved false statements or immigration fraud.
Omar represents Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, which includes Minneapolis.
