President Trump said Thursday that the United States will not carry out any new military strikes against Iran before the November 3 midterm elections, pointing to what he called “productive discussions” with Tehran.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the existing blockade on Iran will stay “in full force and effect” while talks continue. He said oil is still moving through the Strait of Hormuz in large volumes, but that none of it is going to or coming from Iran.
“We are having productive discussions with the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Trump wrote. “I want to make it clear to everybody that, while Iran is in very bad condition, both Economically and Militarily, and while the Blockade will remain in full force and effect, with Oil flowing in Record Numbers of Barrels through the Hormuz Strait (22 Million Barrels, last night alone, with not one barrel coming from, or going to, Iran!), we will not be attacking Iran at any time prior to the Midterm Elections to be held in the United States on November 3rd.”
He added a blunt line making clear where the administration’s limits lie: “IRAN WILL NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON!”
The president’s statement follows comments earlier in the week from Vice President JD Vance, who told Reuters that Iran must make a “meaningful” reduction in its uranium-enrichment capacity as part of any deal to end the military conflict. Vance questioned why Iran would need uranium enriched to 60 percent if it had no intention of building a nuclear weapon.
“We’re not going to trade words for actions,” Vance said.
Vance’s remarks signal that the administration is seeking concrete nuclear concessions from Tehran rather than assurances alone, a position Trump’s post appears to reinforce.
