President Donald Trump has canceled a planned campaign rally at Salina Regional Airport that had been scheduled for Saturday, October 31, just days before voters head to the polls in the midterm elections.
Trump was set to appear at Hangar 509 in support of Republican Sen. Roger Marshall, who is facing a tighter-than-expected reelection fight against Democrat Adam Hamilton. The event had only been announced the Monday before it was scrapped. The Salina Regional Airport Authority confirmed to KMBC that the Trump administration had called off all planned Kansas events for that Saturday.
Organizers had been preparing for as many as 10,000 attendees, with doors set to open at 8:30 a.m. and Trump expected to speak around noon. No specific reason was given for the cancellation at the time it was announced.
The Salina stop would have been the third high-profile Republican appearance in Kansas in recent weeks. Trump campaigned for Marshall in the Wichita suburb of Park City on October 19, and Vice President JD Vance held a separate event in Topeka on October 26.
White House Points to Virtual ‘Telerallies’
Shortly after news of the cancellation spread, the White House said Trump would instead hold more than 20 virtual rallies, or “telerallies,” before Election Day. NewsNation White House correspondent Kellie Meyer reported that a White House official told her: “President Trump will continue connecting directly with Americans nationwide through more than 20 telerallies before Election Day. These events give him the opportunity to highlight his accomplishments and expand his reach across the country.”
A Republican source told Meyer the move was intended to “maximize” the president’s reach in competitive states, saying, “The demand for POTUS to hold rallies has been huge from our candidates, and we are adjusting to a tele-rally to maximize his reach in battleground states.”
The White House has not released a full public schedule for the telerallies. The Salina Post reported Thursday that local Republicans were awaiting details, including a phone number residents could use to listen in to a telephone rally that may replace Saturday’s canceled event.
No Confirmed Reason for the Change
There has been no reporting confirming a security threat or health concern behind the cancellation, and the administration has not pointed to any specific conflicting obligation that forced Trump to skip Salina. Local reporting has focused on scheduling factors, while the White House has framed the switch as a way to reach more voters across the country rather than concentrating time on a single stop.
The cancellation carries added weight in Kansas, where Marshall’s race against Hamilton has drawn national attention. Kansas has not elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate since 1932, making the contest’s competitiveness notable enough to draw repeated visits from both Trump and Vance in the campaign’s final weeks.
