Texas Congressman Presses DHS for Detailed Deportation Numbers

Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) has sent DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin a follow-up letter asking for a detailed breakdown of deportation numbers since President Trump took office.

Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) has sent a follow-up letter to the Department of Homeland Security asking for a detailed accounting of how many illegal aliens have been deported since President Donald Trump took office, according to Breitbart News, which obtained the letter.

The letter, addressed to DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin, follows up on an earlier request Roy sent on June 10, 2026, seeking an update on the administration’s progress toward what Trump has called the largest mass deportation operation in the nation’s history, with a stated goal of removing one million illegal aliens per year.

Roy wrote that Congress needs the data to evaluate whether DHS requires additional resources or legislation to remove more illegal aliens, and to assess enforcement strategies, including prioritizing deportation of illegal aliens with criminal records and conducting worksite enforcement operations.

“DHS has undoubtedly worked around the clock to deploy resources and partner with other federal and state agencies to expand interior enforcement,” Roy wrote. “However, Congress must be kept apprised of an exact accounting of DHS’s critical mission of securing our nation from illegal immigration.”

DHS officials have said more than 605,000 illegal aliens were deported in 2025, though Roy notes other reports put the number of interior deportations at roughly 230,000 for the year. DHS officials have also said about 2.2 million illegal aliens have self-deported since late January 2025.

In his new letter, Roy specifically asks Mullin to provide Congress with the total number of illegal aliens deported, broken down between those removed at the border and those deported from within the U.S. interior.

This is not the first such request. Roy and other House Republicans sent a similar letter in June seeking the same deportation data.
