Nadia Mohamed, the mayor of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, and the first Somali-American elected mayor in the state, has drawn attention online after a video clip of her discussing gun control circulated on social media.
In the clip, Mohamed responds to criticism directed at Somali gangs over gun violence, calling such rhetoric “irresponsible” and “dangerous,” before pivoting to a call for stricter gun policy as a solution.
A crime is a crime is a crime is a crime. But what the rhetoric you are pushing, at best is irresponsible, at worst is dangerous. So you may be wondering, hey Mayor, how can we solve for this then? How can we have conversations that are effective, that can actually get something done? And the answer is easy.
The remarks have gained renewed attention following a shooting at Eden Prairie High School, in the Minneapolis suburb of Eden Prairie in Hennepin County. According to a news release from the Eden Prairie Police Department, gunfire broke out at the school on a Friday around 9:00 p.m. Two males were injured — one 17 years old and one 18 years old. Police said their injuries were not life-threatening. Reports have described the incident as linked to Somali gang activity.
Breitbart News reported on the shooting on October 4, 2026, and separately highlighted Mohamed’s comments, which had been quoted in part by the outlet Bearing Arms.
St. Louis Park and Eden Prairie are both located in Hennepin County, Minnesota. Mohamed has not provided additional public comment beyond the circulated remarks as referenced in the reporting.
