Retired SFPD Sergeant Suspected in Murder-Suicide of Wife and Daughter in Mill Valley

A retired San Francisco deputy police chief and her 24-year-old daughter were found dead in Mill Valley in what authorities believe was a murder-suicide carried out by her husband, a retired SFPD sergeant.

A retired San Francisco Police Department deputy chief and her daughter are dead in what authorities believe was a murder-suicide carried out by the woman’s husband, a retired San Francisco police sergeant, at their home in Mill Valley.

The Marin County Sheriff’s Office identified the dead as Ann Mannix, 65, a former SWAT commander who was the first woman to join and lead the department’s SWAT team; her 24-year-old daughter, Katie; and her husband, 68-year-old retired Sgt. Kevin Mannix.

“The preliminary investigation indicates a suspected double-murder suicide involving three individuals,” said Miguel Almaguer, the Marin County Sheriff’s public information officer. “The suspected shooter is male.”

At a later briefing, Almaguer identified Kevin Mannix as the suspected shooter but declined to discuss evidence recovered from the home.

Deputies were called to the family’s residence in Mill Valley around 5 p.m. Sunday after a 911 call. The caller, described only as another resident of the home, escaped the house safely. When deputies entered, they found all three family members dead.

Autopsies for the victims were scheduled for Tuesday.

Community Reaction

Louis Wong, president of the San Francisco Police Officers Association, issued a statement Monday expressing grief over the deaths.

“It is with profound sadness, shock, and heavy hearts that we address the devastating news that emerged out of Marin County on Sunday evening. The tragic loss of retired Deputy Chief Ann Mannix, her daughter Katie, and retired Sergeant Kevin Mannix in a suspected murder-suicide has left our entire SFPD family reeling. There are no words that can fully capture the depth of this tragedy, nor are there simple answers to the painful questions we are all asking.”

Wong noted that Ann Mannix had also served on the board of the city’s Police Activities League and was a strong supporter of youth sports.

Lou Barberini, a former San Francisco police officer and Bay Area columnist who knew the couple, described Ann Mannix as a respected figure within the department.

“Ann had a lot of talent, and she was very competent. She was a great athlete, she was a good cop, and she was well-liked.”

The San Francisco Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
