A Philadelphia police officer was killed and a second officer was seriously wounded early Saturday morning after they were ambushed while responding to a report of a person with a gun, authorities said.
The officers were shot just past midnight and were both shot multiple times before being rushed to the hospital for surgery, according to FOX 29.
One of the officers, 40-year-old Shane Seiber, did not survive surgery, 6 ABC reported. Seiber, a husband and father of two children ages 7 and 3, was shot three times. His wife and other family members reached the hospital and were with him before he died. The second officer was shot 12 times.
The suspect fled the scene after the shooting and climbed into a tree in an apparent attempt to hide, police said. He eventually came down and surrendered to SWAT officers.
Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel addressed the shooting, praising the officers who serve the department.
“I am so damn proud of the men and women who serve in this department. Consistently, they go into danger, and they give their lives for this job. And so we ask for those prayers, and we ask for you to support our men and women out there, and what they give for this profession,” Bethel said.
