Former President Barack Obama will campaign in Detroit on Saturday, October 24, for Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in Michigan, El-Sayed announced.
“It is my honor and privilege to announce that President @BarackObama is joining us on the trail in Detroit on Saturday, October 24,” El-Sayed wrote on social media. “Get. Ready.”
The rally will also feature other top Michigan Democrats, including Jocelyn Benson, the party’s nominee for governor. According to plans shared first with The Associated Press, Obama is expected to become more active in the midterm elections generally, with additional campaign stops and advertisements planned in the closing weeks before Election Day.
El-Sayed is running against Republican Mike Rogers for the Senate seat. Vice President Kamala Harris previously appeared on the campaign trail for El-Sayed earlier in the race.
The announcement drew renewed attention to a 2012 essay written by El-Sayed criticizing Obama, which was circulated by the Democrats for Mike Rogers account on X. In the essay, El-Sayed wrote that Obama “has perpetuated war, violated our civil liberties, deported more people from our shores than any other president before him, and the list of his failures goes on.”
The October 24 event is one of several high-profile appearances scheduled in Michigan as Democrats seek to mobilize voters ahead of the midterms.
