A camping trip in the Colorado wilderness turned into a scramble for a passport and a last-minute flight to London for Jacob Bobenmoyer, a former Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders long snapper who was signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars ahead of their game against the Houston Texans at Wembley Stadium.
Bobenmoyer, 29, a Northern Colorado alum, was camping when his agent texted him that the Jaguars would likely be reaching out. He headed home in case he needed to leave for the airport that night, which turned out to be the case.
The call came while Bobenmoyer was, in his words, “changing diapers and whatnot.” He then had to track down a passport he hadn’t used in some time and had tucked away in a bathroom drawer.
“They called me, and I was like, ‘Man, I hope it’s still there,'” Bobenmoyer said, according to the Associated Press.
The Jaguars needed a long snapper after Ross Matiscik was injured during last weekend’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. Defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton filled in but struggled, including a high snap on an extra point that led to a botched hold and a rare missed kick from kicker Cam Little.
Bobenmoyer has appeared in 97 NFL games across three seasons with the Broncos and three with the Raiders. He became a free agent in the offseason but kept training on his own in hopes of another opportunity.
“I just train and work out exactly how I would if I was with a team,” he said. “It paid off.”
