Apple TV’s science fiction drama “Dark Matter” wrapped its second season Thursday, Oct. 29, with the finale “No Quiet Life,” but the streamer has not yet announced whether the show will return for a third season.
Season 2, like the first season, ran for 10 episodes. The finale’s official synopsis described “a high-stakes gambit” that “leads to unintended consequences.”
Apple TV has a history of taking time before confirming renewals, and the show has given itself plenty of story left to tell. Season 2 also earned a Certified Fresh 82% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
Producer Jacquelyn Ben-Zekry told ScreenRant that the series was conceived from the start as a three-part story. “We designed Season 2, and when we were pitching it to Apple, and we were going through the process of getting it greenlit we designed the whole show to be three seasons. We see it as a trilogy, and that would be such an amazing opportunity to get to end something on your own terms and have a real round and complete story. And we’re very hopeful that that’s something that happens,” Ben-Zekry said.
Cast member Jimmi Simpson, who plays Ryan, spoke with Decider about what he’d like to see for his character if a third season moves forward. “Ryan’s been motivated by science his whole life. I would love to see him find a little bit of love. You want that for everybody, right? But especially a guy like Ryan who’s succeeded in so much except for that. He needs something better than the pavia in his life,” Simpson said, adding that he supports a possible romance between Ryan and the character Amanda.
“As it stands, it’s clear that Amanda does and probably will eternally hold a bit of a candle for Jason. And I think Ryan observed that. He might have developed a quick crush, but then as soon as she sees Jason, he’s like, ‘Ah.’ So he’s biding his time. Ryan’s a very patient man, clearly. He can sit in other universes and just try and figure out stuff,” Simpson said.
Before the season finale aired, Simpson also described the stakes of the new episodes, noting the gap between plans and reality that defines the season. “Just like life, you make these great, fantastic plans, and they’re all coming together. But then there’s this one unexpected reality that you couldn’t even possibly prepare for. That’s what we’re dealing with,” he said.
With no official renewal, there is no premiere date set for a potential Season 3. Fans should also brace for a possible wait: there was a two-year gap between the Season 1 and Season 2 premieres.
“Dark Matter” Season 2 is now streaming in full on Apple TV, which offers a seven-day free trial for new subscribers and an ad-free plan for $14.99 a month. A bundle with Peacock is also available starting at $14.99 a month.
