A short clip from an upcoming film about NFL broadcasting legend John Madden has drawn sharp criticism online, with many viewers taking issue with actor Nicolas Cage’s portrayal of the late coach and commentator.
In the clip, Cage appears in a fat-face prosthetic playing Madden, using a telestrator to draw lines over a football play while fellow broadcast booth crew members poke fun at his use of the device.
Reaction on social media platform X was largely negative. One user, Dudley Brown, called it “horrid acting.” Another edited a still from the scene to add the letters “snl,” suggesting it looked more like a Saturday Night Live sketch than a serious film. A separate commenter asked, “This is a serious movie?? Not an SNL sketch??”
Social media user Mark Valorian described the clip as “basically a desecration of Madden’s legacy. Astoundingly bad.” Another critic wrote that Cage “sounds like 10% Jimmy Stewart, 90% Nicolas Cage. 0% Madden.”
A user posting under the handle Raider Greatness questioned the casting decision directly, writing, “Whomever green lit Nicolas Cage as John Madden is a ****ing idiot!” Another commenter said, “Out of respect to John Madden, I will not watch this movie.”
Some reactions framed the criticism as a matter of respect for Madden’s memory. A user named Robbie Harvey wrote:
I’ve never pushed for a movie to not be released… but John Madden deserves better. This is an embarrassment to his legacy.
A follow-up comment agreed, stating, “He doesn’t look or sound like Madden at all this is just totally disrespectful I will never watch this.”
