Meghan Markle had already stepped back from following the news before a report surfaced last week alleging that her father, Thomas Markle Sr., 82, is under investigation over claims he hoarded as many as “thousands” of child pornography images at his home, according to a friend who spoke with Hello! Magazine.
The friend told the magazine Monday that the Duchess of Sussex, 45, “decided a while ago,” before the allegations against her father broke, “that she was going to take herself away from the media and not look at anything, for her own mental health.”
The friend described Markle as “just really, really upset” since learning of the claims against her father.
“She keeps on looking at Lili and she’s in tears, and thinking about all the children, the alleged victims,” the friend said, referring to Markle’s 5-year-old daughter, Princess Lilibet. “She has young children herself. It’s just devastating.”
According to the friend, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle left the United Kingdom with their two children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, after the allegations became public. It is unclear where the family traveled.
Separately, Markle is set to appear as a “special guest” on “Junior MasterChef Australia” alongside host Poh Ling Yeow when the cooking competition returns in 2027 after a six-year absence, a Page Six source confirmed. Markle called her decision to join the show an “easy yes.”
Thomas Markle Sr. has not been named in any formal charges as of this writing; the investigation into the allegations remains ongoing.
