Meghan Markle was seen dining with education activist Malala Yousafzai at Claridge’s, the five-star hotel in London’s Mayfair district, in her first public outing in the capital since relocating back to the UK with Prince Harry and their children.
The pair were captured in the background of a TikTok video posted by user @losrodriguez.mx on Wednesday, which showed a group of friends toasting with wine glasses in the foreground while Markle, 45, and Yousafzai, 29, appeared deep in conversation across the table from one another.
“POV: Claridge’s decided to seat Meghan Markle and Malala in front of you,” the TikTok caption read.
Markle wore a white long-sleeved shirt for the dinner, while Yousafzai, the Nobel Prize-winning advocate for girls’ education, wore a beige coat.
The two women first connected in 2020 through a virtual conversation hosted by the Malala Fund marking the International Day of the Girl, during which they discussed obstacles to girls’ education and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on students globally.
“Meghan and I are on the same page: we both believe that when girls have access to education, everyone wins,” Yousafzai wrote on social media after that meeting, adding: “Thank you so much to The Duke and Duchess of Sussex for sitting down with me to have an important conversation about the future of our world.”
The Claridge’s dinner is notable because it marks Markle’s first appearance in London itself since she, Harry and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, moved back to the UK at the end of August. The couple’s relocation was reported to be aimed at bringing them closer to Harry’s father, King Charles III, who is being treated for cancer, and at giving their children the chance to build relationships with extended family.
Since arriving, Markle has made several public appearances outside London. Last month she met Ellen DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, at a pub near Burford, Oxfordshire. Last week, she and Harry, 42, were photographed holding hands as they arrived at a Cotswolds pub for lunch.
