A man was arrested after spending more than an hour crawling through the ceiling of a Macy’s store in Vancouver, Washington, damaging tiles, lighting and wiring before falling to the floor as police watched.
Employees at the store, located inside a Vancouver shopping mall, called police on Sept. 30 after spotting the man moving above their heads and breaking ceiling tiles, according to the Vancouver Police Department. The second floor of the store was evacuated while officers worked to get him down.
Police set up a ladder leading into the ceiling space and placed a mattress on the floor below in case he fell, according to KATU. The man ignored repeated requests from officers to come down and kept causing damage overhead.
After more than an hour, police said the man, identified as Gabriel Hideo, finally stepped onto the ladder but then changed his mind and tried to climb back into the ceiling. As officers pulled on the ladder to stop him, Hideo fell, appearing to strike the ladder before landing on the mattress below, according to video released by police.
“He landed on the mattress, got up and tried to run. That didn’t work out so well,” the Vancouver Police Department wrote on Facebook.
Footage shows Hideo rolling across the ground before trying to flee from the group of officers. He was grunting loudly as police placed him in handcuffs, the video shows.
Hideo was booked into the Clark County Jail on first-degree charges of malicious mischief and burglary, along with an outstanding felony warrant, according to KATU.
