HBO’s ‘Lanterns’ Wraps Its First Season Tonight With Unanswered Mysteries

HBO’s superhero drama “Lanterns” airs its Season 1 finale, “Dirt and Stars,” tonight at 9 PM ET, with the murder of Hal Jordan and Sinestro’s escape from Oa still unresolved.

HBO’s freshman superhero drama “Lanterns” closes out its first season tonight, Sunday, October 4, 2026, with an eighth and final episode titled “Dirt and Stars.” The episode premieres on HBO and HBO Max at 9 PM ET.

The series, starring Kyle Chandler as original Green Lantern Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as his potential successor John Stewart, has run for eight episodes this season. It has drawn attention for its grounded take on the Green Lantern mythology and a cast that includes performers familiar from “Friday Night Lights,” “Rebel Ridge,” “Fargo,” “Deli Boys” and “Matlock.”

Last week’s penultimate episode left viewers with a cliffhanger: the “Halogram,” a younger version of the murdered Hal Jordan played by Chandler, and John Stewart traveled to a distant planet featuring water and mist that forces people to confront their greatest fears. Sinestro, played by Ulrich Thomsen, also turned up on the same planet, raising questions about how he escaped imprisonment by the Guardians on the planet Oa.

The finale is expected to address two central mysteries that have driven the season: who killed Hal Jordan and why, and how Sinestro broke free of his confinement. Whether those answers arrive tonight remains to be seen.

“Lanterns” is exclusive to HBO and HBO Max. The streaming service offers a plan starting at $10.99 a month with ads, or $18.49 a month ad-free. Viewers can also access the show through a Disney+ Bundle that includes Hulu and HBO Max, priced at $19.99 a month with ads or $32.99 a month without.

No second season of “Lanterns” has been confirmed, though the show’s cast and premise leave the door open. Separately, Aaron Pierre is already set to reprise his role as John Stewart in next summer’s “Man of Tomorrow,” the follow-up to “Superman,” meaning the character will return to screens regardless of whether HBO renews the series.
