LPGA golfer Charley Hull says she came close to getting a tattoo across her forehead during a drunken night out in Ibiza at age 17 — and only a friend’s intervention stopped her.
Hull shared the story in a conversation with Golfweek, explaining that she and a friend named James were out partying when the idea struck her.
“I’ve got three tattoos. I’ve got one on my foot. I got drunk when I was in Ibiza when I was 17 years old. Me and my friend James went out partying,” she said.
According to Hull, the inspiration came from a phrase she and James often said to each other.
“I was coming back from the club, and I thought it would be a great idea to get a tattoo across my head, because me and my best mate, James, our favorite thing we always said to each other was ‘Hold tight, hold tight,'” she explained.
James intervened before the tattoo artist could ink her forehead. Instead, Hull got “hold tight” tattooed on her foot, and James later got a matching tattoo on his arm.
Hull said she had no memory of the tattoo the next morning.
“Bloody hell, was I that drunk last night? I walked back with a plastic bag on my foot,” she recalled saying. James responded, “No, Charley. That’s the wrapping after you’ve had your tattoo.”
She said she was stunned to learn what had happened overnight.
“I was like, ‘What? I got a tattoo?’ He said, ‘Yeah, you were trying to get it on your forehead and we had to stop you there,'” Hull said.
Hull’s other two tattoos have less dramatic backstories. She has her ex-husband’s name tattooed on her wrist, which she has said she has tried to have removed, and a lightning bolt on her finger that matches a tattoo belonging to another friend.
