A federal investigation into Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) is reportedly being referred to internally as “World War 11,” a nickname that plays on a verbal slip the Minnesota Democrat made last year, according to a report from the Washington Post.
News of the investigation surfaced Monday, though the exact scope and focus of the probe have not been made public. Agents with Homeland Security Investigations, a division of the Department of Homeland Security, executed a search warrant at Omar’s home in Washington, DC, suggesting the matter may involve immigration-related questions.
“Today in the Washington, DC, area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice,” a Department of Justice official told Fox News Digital. “This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal investigation.”
The nickname reportedly traces back to a January 2025 press conference, during which Omar appeared to say “World War Eleven” instead of “World War II” while drawing a comparison between President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement policies and the internment of Japanese Americans during the Second World War. The moment went viral at the time.
Trump himself referenced the gaffe in July, joking at the White House Correspondents Association Dinner that Omar calls her brother “husband #1” — a remark tied to long-standing immigration fraud allegations against her.
Years of Allegations
Questions about Omar’s immigration history are not new. In July 2019, Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton wrote in Breitbart News calling on the House Ethics Committee to investigate Omar’s past. His complaint alleged perjury, immigration fraud, marriage fraud, state and federal tax fraud, and federal student loan fraud.
Fitton wrote at the time: “Documented-based reporting by Steinberg, et al. has developed the following information: Rep. Ilhan Abdullahi Omar, a citizen of the United States, married her biological brother, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, a citizen of the United Kingdom, in 2009, presumably as part of an immigration fraud scheme.”
Separately, the New York Times reported in January that the Justice Department under former President Joe Biden had opened an investigation into Omar’s finances after reports indicated she had built a multi-million-dollar net worth during her time in Congress.
Omar Responds
Following the raid, Omar characterized the investigation as politically motivated.
“I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement,” Omar said. “For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.”
No further details about the investigation’s findings or timeline have been disclosed.
