Comcast is preparing for a significant round of restructuring costs exceeding $1 billion in the fourth quarter of 2026, as the company moves toward spinning off NBCUniversal in a tax-free transaction planned for 2027.
CFO Jason Armstrong disclosed the plan during Comcast’s third-quarter 2026 earnings call, telling investors the company expects “a significant charge in the fourth quarter related mostly to our transformation efforts,” which he quantified at “over $1 billion,” according to Variety.
The exact number of jobs affected among Comcast’s 179,000 employees has not been determined. Variety reported that departments across the company are still in the early stages of evaluating where cuts could be made.
Armstrong framed the restructuring as preparation for the spin-off rather than a simple cost-cutting measure, saying it is meant to get the company ready for “a fast start into 2027” and to keep Comcast “competitive.”
“We don’t look at it as a cost-cutting exercise. This is the ability to simplify in order to move faster, to be more nimble in decision-making, and I think really create capacity, you know, to invest for growth,” Armstrong said.
The restructuring comes as Comcast’s traditional cable business continues to shrink amid broader shifts in how people consume entertainment. The cable division’s revenue fell 2.7% to $19.66 billion in the third quarter. By contrast, NBCUniversal’s television, film and theme park operations saw revenue climb 6.5% to $10.54 billion over the same period.
Comcast co-CEO Mike Cavanagh addressed the planned separation of NBCUniversal and Sky, saying the company has “a clear path to completion” even though “there is still significant work ahead.”
“We remain focused on creating two companies with the strategic flexibility, financial strength and leadership to compete and grow independently,” Cavanagh said. “And we have tremendous confidence in the future of both companies. Each has significant structural advantages, a strong competitive position, and substantial opportunities for long-term growth and value creation.”
