General Mills is changing how Cheerios boxes work, adding a resealable bag designed to eliminate the need for clips, clothespins and rolled-up plastic to keep cereal fresh.
The company has partnered with Ziploc to launch Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal, a bag inside the box that opens only partway across the top, creating a pour spout. That spout can then be resealed, unlike the standard bags that have shipped inside cereal boxes for decades.
General Mills says the move responds to years of customer frustration. The company reports that Cheerios and Ziploc together receive hundreds of thousands of requests, comments and reactions about cereal packaging every year.
A December 2025 survey from consumer insights platform Suzy found that 90% of cereal eaters take extra steps to keep their cereal fresh after opening the box, relying on clips, clothespins or separate containers.
“Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal takes a small, everyday cereal frustration and finally gives consumers the simple solution they’ve been asking for,” said Emilie Knox, vice president and business unit director for Cheerios at General Mills.
A Long-Standing Complaint
The gripe has shown up repeatedly on social media over the years. In a 2024 Reddit post that drew hundreds of upvotes, one user asked, “Why don’t cereal companies use Ziploc type bags?” Another wrote earlier this year, “They could of did this 30 years ago. People have been asking for ages.”
Reaction to the announcement has been largely positive. “Cheerios just solved one of the biggest childhood problems,” one person wrote on X.
The PantrySeal bag isn’t identical to a standard Ziploc bag — its zipper-style closure runs only partway across the top, leaving a gap intended to make pouring easier and cut down on spills.
Limited Rollout for Now
The new packaging is being offered as an option for original Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios, not as a full replacement for existing bags. It became available exclusively at Walmart starting Oct. 27, with a wider national rollout to other retailers expected in the coming months.
