An 86-year-old Apple Valley woman died Friday night after running into the street to help her dog, which had just been struck by a car, when a second vehicle hit her.
Mary Wear, known to family and friends as “Meeka,” was struck at about 8:15 p.m. on Waalew Road while trying to reach her dog, Benji, after it was hit by another vehicle, according to authorities. A 70-year-old woman driving the second car struck Wear. That driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Drugs and alcohol were not a factor, according to KTLA 5.
Wear was the mother of seven children, grandmother of four and great-grandmother of nine. A GoFundMe set up by her family describes her as “the heart of her family, a treasured friend to many, and a woman whose warmth, kindness, and love touched the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know her.”
Even at 86, family members said, Wear remained active and engaged in her community. She had recently been helping her daughter and granddaughter open the Buc N Doe Restaurant in Fawnskin, a small community in San Bernardino County near Big Bear Lake.
“Even at 86 years young, Meeka continued to embrace life with enthusiasm and a wonderful sense of purpose,” the GoFundMe page reads.
Before her death, Wear had told her daughter what she wanted done with her remains. “Cremate me and spread my ashes at the Buc N Doe,” she had said, according to the fundraiser. She had already made her own cremation arrangements.
The GoFundMe campaign aims to pay for a lasting memorial for Wear and her two sons, who died before her. As of Monday evening, the fund had raised more than $1,000 toward its $1,500 goal.
