Sen. Susan Collins’ constituent service office in Biddeford was vandalized Monday morning, with a derogatory and misogynistic message spray-painted on the building’s front doors, according to a photo shared by state Sen. Matt Harrington (R-York).
Harrington, who represents Maine’s District 33, posted the image on social media, writing: “I was sent this photo of Senator Collins’ Biddeford office this morning. What has the world come to? This is disgusting, disappointing and it’s not the Maine I grew up in. Do better.”
Collins’ chief of staff, Katie Brown, responded with a statement condemning the incident. “Vandalism is unacceptable,” Brown said. “Senator Collins and her staff will not be intimidated. Our Biddeford constituent service office remains open, and we will continue serving the people of Maine.”
As of Monday, no suspect had been identified in connection with the vandalism.
The incident comes amid a contested race for Collins’ Senate seat. Democratic delegates at Maine’s nominating convention selected former state senate president Troy Jackson as their candidate after Graham Platner withdrew from the race following allegations against him. Jackson has previously criticized Collins using language suggesting she is beholden to President Trump, including remarks characterized by critics as claiming “Trump owns her.”
Jackson issued his own statement condemning the vandalism at Collins’ office. “Vandalism and intimidation are wrong, full stop,” he said. “Senator Collins and her staff should be able to do their jobs without anyone defacing their office, and I condemn whoever did this.”
No further details about the vandalism, including the exact wording of the spray-painted message, have been made public.
