Resurfaced remarks from Texas Democrat James Talarico show a pattern of comments over several years in which he urged action against President Donald Trump, including a 2022 call for then-President Joe Biden to “prosecute Trump and his fellow insurrectionists,” and repeated references to Trump’s two impeachments during rallies in San Antonio and Austin.
At the 2022 Texas Democratic Convention, Talarico told attendees that the Democratic Party was “the only thing standing between this country and fascism” and pushed Biden to use expansive federal authority against Trump and his allies.
“We need President Biden to start using every tool in the toolbox to protect our freedom. Lease federal land to abortion providers, declare a public health emergency, impeach justices who lied under oath, prosecute Trump and his fellow insurrectionists!”
Two years later, in an MSNBC appearance, Talarico described Trump as “a business cheat, a pathological liar, a serial adulterer, a twice-impeached insurrectionist, a convicted felon, and an adjudicated rapist,” and said his faith led him to back Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz that election cycle. In a separate appearance in July 2024, he called Trump a “useful idiot” for religious extremists.
Talarico has continued to reference Trump’s impeachments at Texas rallies alongside former Rep. Beto O’Rourke and Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX). At a June 27, 2025, rally in San Antonio, Talarico invoked the state’s Democratic political history, including Castro’s role in impeaching Trump:
“Texas Democrats know how to fight. Whether it was LBJ pushing the Great Society through Congress, or Barbara Jordan impeaching Richard Nixon, or our own Joaquin Castro impeaching Donald Trump, or Beto O’Rourke interrupting Greg Abbott’s press conference in Uvalde, Texas Democrats know how to fight for the people, con ganas. We fight for the many against the powerful few, whether they are bullies, bigots, or billionaires.”
He repeated nearly identical remarks less than a month later at a July 25, 2025, rally in Austin held in opposition to redistricting efforts.
Impeachment talk resurfaces in Washington
Talarico’s earlier comments surface as congressional Democrats have again floated the possibility of impeaching Trump should the party retake control of Congress. Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA) said in August that impeachment “always has to be on the table,” and Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) said Trump has “committed impeachable offenses.” Rep. Johnny Olszewski (D-MD) said impeachment should “absolutely” be a priority if Democrats win the House, adding he would support pursuing it if investigations led there. Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) said impeachment is “not a taboo” for Democrats and that Trump has “undoubtedly” committed impeachable conduct. Rep. Madeleine Dean (D-PA), who served as an impeachment manager and voted to impeach Trump twice in his first term, said there is a “larger laundry list” of conduct from his second term, though she did not say how she would vote on a future impeachment.
Republican leaders have said they expect another impeachment attempt if Democrats regain the House majority. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) said in August that Democrats would “impeach the president day one,” pointing to three impeachment resolutions already filed by House Democrats since Trump returned to office in January 2025. House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) said Democrats “will definitely” impeach Trump again if given the chance. Trump was impeached twice during his first term, and the Senate acquitted him both times.
