Nike has unveiled a new set of alternate NBA jerseys called the “Spectre Edition,” designed for eight of the league’s oldest franchises, and the reveal has drawn heavy criticism on social media.
The jerseys are the latest in a long line of alternate uniform releases across the NBA, which in recent years has expanded beyond standard home and away jerseys to include throwback editions, “City Edition” jerseys, “Statement Edition” jerseys and other special releases.
Reaction to the Spectre Edition designs has been largely negative, with commentators and fans online criticizing the look of the new uniforms.
The jersey backlash comes as Nike faces broader business struggles. The company is ending an 18-year run as a member of the S&P 100 index.
Nike has also faced criticism in the past over some of its advertising campaigns, including a Boston Marathon ad that the company walked back following backlash over what critics called “pace shaming.”
Nike has not issued a public response to the criticism of the Spectre Edition jerseys.
