Former Vice President Kamala Harris appeared at an NAACP event in Detroit, where she criticized efforts to remove non-citizens from voter rolls and campaigned alongside Michigan U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed.
During her remarks, Harris invoked a quote associated with Shirley Chisholm, saying, “Shirley Chisholm talked about it. If you’re not at the table, bring a folding chair, otherwise you might be on the menu.” She then added, “I’m conflating two people saying that,” laughing at the mix-up.
Harris also addressed the removal of ineligible voters — including non-citizens — from state voter rolls, a practice that has drawn scrutiny in several states. “They are cheating by purging voter rolls,” Harris said. “So we say as leaders then to folks, not only must you register to vote, check your voter registration status to make sure you haven’t been purged from the rolls. They’re trying to take our tools, but we are a creative people. And we know how to fight and we have always been fighting against the odds. And that has never deterred us.”
Harris’s appearance came as she campaigned for El-Sayed, a Democratic candidate running for U.S. Senate in Michigan. During the event, Harris spoke about maternal health care, telling the crowd, “On this subject, I know he will be a champion,” referring to El-Sayed. She also described opposition to diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives as “an attack on maternal care.”
El-Sayed has previously drawn criticism for comments describing breast cancer funding as “disturbing.”
The Detroit appearance has fueled speculation among political observers about whether Harris intends to seek the presidency again in 2028, though she has not announced any such plans.
