A moment meant to honor a teammate’s milestone turned into an odd sideline standoff for the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, after linebacker Josh Hines-Allen got into a heated exchange with an NFL ball boy over a football.
The dispute stemmed from a big play by rookie Travis Hunter, the Jaguars’ top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, who recorded his first career interception during the game. After spinning the ball on the turf and running off to celebrate with teammates, Hunter left the ball on the field, where it was quickly scooped up by a sideline ball boy.
Hines-Allen, apparently hoping to secure the ball as a keepsake for Hunter, approached the staffer and asked for it. The ball boy refused to hand it over. When Hines-Allen reached for the football anyway, the staffer pushed his arm away and shouted that the player could not touch him.
“You can’t touch me! Hey! He pushed me!” the ball boy shouted.
Rather than back off, Hines-Allen gave the ball boy a pat on the back, which only escalated the situation further. The staffer repeated his warnings loudly and appealed to another sideline employee, who then stepped between Hines-Allen and the ball to defuse the confrontation.
It remains unclear whether the football ever made its way to Hunter. Video of the incident shows the ball boy never surrendering it to Hines-Allen or any other member of the Jaguars organization.
Ball boys typically hand over game balls when players request them, particularly for meaningful moments like a rookie’s first NFL interception. The physical resistance shown in this instance was unusual, and while Hines-Allen’s decision to touch the staffer was out of line, the ball boy’s refusal to simply hand over the football also contributed to the standoff.
