House GOP Trade Chief Meeting Comes Amid Canada Tariff Fight and Lake Renaming Order

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is meeting with House Republicans this week as tensions over Trump’s tariffs on Canada, including a 50% duty and an order renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America,” intensify.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is set to meet with House Republicans on Wednesday as President Trump’s tariff dispute with Canada becomes an increasingly visible political issue.

Greer is scheduled to attend the Republican Study Committee’s weekly lunch this week, according to a source familiar with the planning. Two additional sources said they expect lawmakers to bring up Trump’s trade war with Canada during the meeting.

The gathering comes as tensions between the United States and Canada have sharpened in recent weeks. On Sunday, Trump wrote on Truth Social that Canada wants “to be treated like a state, but they aren’t one,” accusing the country of unfair trade practices.

“They’ve been ripping us off for decades, and it’s going to stop,” Trump wrote.

The United States imposed a 50% tariff on a range of Canadian goods in late July, with those duties taking effect earlier this month. Canada responded with its own tariffs of up to 50% on U.S. imports.

Trump further escalated the dispute this month by signing an executive order renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America.”

It is not yet clear when the meeting between Greer and the Republican Study Committee was scheduled, or whether lawmakers plan to raise questions about the trade war or voice outright opposition to it.

Tariffs have remained a contentious issue within the GOP throughout Trump’s second term. In February, the House passed a bill aimed at reversing Trump’s earlier tariffs on Canada, with six Republicans voting in favor. Only one Democrat, Rep. Jared Golden of Maine, voted against the measure.
