HBO Max has confirmed that “The Pitt,” the medical drama set at a fictional Pittsburgh trauma center, will return for its third season in January 2027. The announcement comes on the heels of a big night for the show at the Emmy Awards, where star Noah Wyle won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for the second year in a row for his role as Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, and the series itself won Outstanding Drama Series.
Season 2 of the show wrapped in April 2026, but HBO renewed “The Pitt” for a third season before that season even finished airing, so the return was never really in doubt. What fans have been waiting on is a date.
According to HBO, the new season will take place on November 12, 2026, the day after Veterans Day, continuing the show’s format of following the staff of a Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center through the course of a single, chaotic shift.
Wyle told Deadline that the coming season will follow Robby as he works through his own recovery.
“Season 3 is about doctors benefiting from being patients,” Wyle said. “We’re going to see that [Robby]’s begun the therapeutic road; it’s had a positive effect. It’s fragile, and it’s not without risk and vulnerability, but it’s at least there’s forward progress.”
The cast is also expanding. Seven new recurring characters have been added for Season 3, played by Stephen Chang, Barry Clifton, Chris Diamantopoulos, Lawrence Kao, Brent Sexton, JB Tadena and Hannah Ware.
“The Pitt” Season 3 premieres in January 2027 on HBO Max.
