A 2-year-old boy died Tuesday afternoon inside a Frankfort home in what police are calling a domestic-related homicide, and his mother was found in the house attempting self-harm, according to Frankfort police.
Officers were called to the home at about 4:04 p.m. Tuesday for a report of an unresponsive juvenile. CPR was already underway when police arrived. The boy was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead. The Will County Coroner’s Office said he was pronounced dead at 4:48 p.m. at Silver Cross Hospital and described the death as an apparent homicide.
Police said they also found the boy’s mother inside the home attempting self-harm. She was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Frankfort Fire Protection District was dispatched two minutes after the initial call and transported five people from the house. Police said no additional injuries occurred at the scene.
Frankfort Police Chief Leanne Chelepis released a statement extending condolences to those affected.
“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy,” Chelepis said. “We encourage our community to support one another with compassion, understanding, and strength as we navigate this difficult time together.”
Authorities have not released the names of the child or his mother. They have not said how the boy died or whether anyone will face charges. Detectives worked the cul-de-sac scene into Wednesday morning.
Frankfort police said the investigation remains ongoing and that no additional information is currently available.
