This is not just a disagreement about tools, it is a fight over who defines what counts as progress and who gets to keep the gains. For many Americans, the technology has already shown where the benefits land and where the costs fall.
Tech insiders describe three camps: power users, doubters, and resistors, and the split is widening. Andrej Karpathy — the former Tesla AI director and OpenAI founding member who coined the term “vibe coding” — noted that power users and skeptics are often “speaking past each other.” He captured the crux: two people can have wildly different realities depending on whether they’ve used a cutting-edge paid model or a dusty free demo.
Karpathy also wrote, “The thing is that these free and old/deprecated models don’t reflect the capability in the latest round of state of the art agentic models of this year,” and that matters. The biggest leaps have been in verifiable domains like code and math, where results are obvious and repeatable, not in the messy realm of prose where hallucinations draw ridicule. The technical point is real, but it only answers part of the problem.
If you manage a call center and your job is replaced by a bot, you don’t care which model produced it or whether it passed a benchmark. You care about a paycheck and about who negotiated that change. Skepticism born of proximity is not ignorance; it is lived experience. Too often the tech elite treat it like a user-onboarding problem instead of a governance challenge.
Polls show the political stakes. A recent survey found that a large majority of Americans carry serious concerns about AI’s consequences, and global polling shows elites tend to be optimistic while ordinary people favor regulations and protections. Young workers consistently report worrying about their economic futures in the face of automation. When developers and the public disagree by wide margins, legitimacy—not just messaging—is on the line.
The industry’s tone toward critics has hardened. “The Doomer narratives were wrong,” one prominent investor declared, and a senior advisor called catastrophic-risk talk “a distraction and harmful and now effectively proven wrong.” Those dismissals target researchers who raised questions about accountability, displacement, and concentrated power. Saying the timeline was alarmist does not answer who owns the technology or who pays for its consequences.
Meanwhile, some firms are planning for profound disruption while asking government to stand aside. A policy paper titled “Industrial Policy for the Intelligence Age” proposes sweeping measures like a national wealth fund and shifting taxes from labor to capital. That document frames a future where political upheaval may be needed to manage AI’s effects even as the firms behind the tech urge minimal restraint today.
The Bible offers a caution for this moment: “Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth.” The actors change, the pattern does not. Productivity gains often flow upward and leave workers with disruption and few guarantees.
That does not mean AI is all bad. It can speed medical research, aid science, and free people from tedious tasks when deployed responsibly. The central question is distribution: who captures the upside, who carries the risk, and what institutions will enforce accountability. At the moment the answers incline toward a narrow class of investors and technologists rather than the broader public.
Policy matters because markets alone will not fix incentive failures or protect communities hit first by automation. Conservative principles of economic freedom must be matched by accountability to workers, clear liability, and durable social supports that preserve dignity. If Republican leaders want markets that last, they should insist on structures that make tech firms answer to more than quarterly returns.
The rift between power users and skeptics won’t close with better tutorials or cheaper subscriptions. It will change only when those steering the tech can be held to shared standards and when ordinary Americans see real, enforceable protections. Until then the camps will keep drifting apart and the political consequences will only get louder.
