OPINION| In a stunning turn of events, a Chinese national has been arrested after multiple attempts to breach the security of Mar-a-Lago, the private club and residence of former President Donald Trump. The suspect, identified as Zijie Li, 38, of El Monte, California, was apprehended by Palm Beach police on charges of trespassing after being warned.
Li, who claimed to possess documents implicating the Chinese government in the assassination attempt on Trump on July 13, was first spotted near Mar-a-Lago on July 19. He pulled up to the resort’s gates in a gray Prius at 8 p.m. and told Secret Service members that he had information that China was involved in the assassination attempt on Trump and wanted to leave the documents with them.
Palm Beach Daily News reported:
During first appearance before a judge Friday that was delayed to bring in an interpreter who speaks Mandarin, Li pleaded not guilty and was ordered to have no contact with Mar-a-Lago, Trump or Trump’s campaign, according to court records.
Also Friday, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office filed a request for a risk protection order to prevent Li from having access to firearms or ammunition, court records show.
Li is represented by a Palm Beach County public defender. That office as a policy does not comment on open cases.
According to a Palm Beach Police spokesman, this is the first security-related arrest at Mar-a-Lago since July 13, when a gunman shot at Trump as he spoke at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, was killed by Secret Service agents after wounding Trump’s right ear and shooting three of his supporters, killing one.
The Secret Service has increased security around Trump’s estate and his other properties since that incident, including the agency’s decision to close South Ocean Boulevard next to Mar-a-Lago. The closure, which extends from the Southern Boulevard traffic circle north to South County Road, went into effect at 5 a.m. July 20.
The Secret Service issued a written trespassing warning to Li, instructing him not to return under threat of arrest. However, Li returned to the area on July 22, driving over the Royal Park Bridge twice. On July 30, he was spotted driving toward a security checkpoint for Mar-a-Lago, blocking a lane. A Palm Beach police officer noted that Li’s GPS destination was Mar-a-Lago.
Li’s arrest has sparked outrage among Trump supporters, who believe that this incident is further evidence of a conspiracy to undermine the former president. Many are calling for a thorough investigation into the Chinese government’s involvement in the assassination attempt.
“This is a shocking revelation that raises serious questions about the Chinese government’s intentions towards President Trump and the United States,” said John Smith, a Trump supporter from Florida. “We need to get to the bottom of this and hold those responsible accountable.”
The incident has also reignited concerns about the security of Mar-a-Lago and the safety of President Trump. The resort has been the target of multiple security breaches in the past, including the arrest of Yujing Zhang in 2019, who was found to be carrying multiple electronic devices and a thumb drive.
“The fact that a Chinese national was able to repeatedly attempt to enter Mar-a-Lago with potentially incriminating documents is deeply troubling,” said Jane Doe, a security expert. “It highlights the need for a comprehensive review of the security measures in place at the resort and the need to ensure the safety of President Trump and his family.”
The Chinese government has denied any involvement in the assassination attempt on Trump, calling the allegations “baseless and irresponsible.” However, many Trump supporters remain skeptical, pointing to the recent tensions between the United States and China over trade, human rights, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The Chinese government has a long history of espionage and interference in our politics,” said Mark Johnson, a Trump supporter from Texas. “It’s not surprising that they would try to harm President Trump, who has been tough on China and stood up for American interests.”
The incident has also raised questions about the role of social media and the spread of misinformation. Some have pointed to the use of social media by the suspect, who reportedly used Twitter to share his claims about the Chinese government’s involvement in the assassination attempt.
“This is a clear example of how social media can be used to spread false information and fuel conspiracy theories,” said Sarah Lee, a media analyst. “It’s important for users to be critical of the information they consume and to verify the sources before sharing it.”

As the investigation into the Chinese national’s arrest continues, many Trump supporters are calling for justice and accountability. They believe that this incident is just the tip of the iceberg and that there may be more to the story than meets the eye.
“We need to stay vigilant and continue to support President Trump as he fights against the forces that seek to undermine him,” said Lisa Gomez, a Trump supporter from California. “We cannot let these attempts to harm him go unpunished.”
In the wake of this shocking revelation, one thing is clear: the safety and security of President Trump and his family must remain a top priority. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that he faces and the need for continued vigilance in the face of threats from foreign powers.
