OPINION| In a stunning turn of events, the Democratic party seems to be in complete disarray as Vermont Senator Peter Welch has become the first Democrat in the Senate to call for President Joe Biden to drop out of the 2024 presidential race. Welch’s bold move has sent shockwaves through the party, leaving many wondering if this is the beginning of the end for Biden’s reelection campaign.

In a recent op-ed for The Washington Post, Welch argued that Biden’s disastrous debate performance and his advanced age have raised valid concerns about his fitness for office. The senator also emphasized that, while he respects Biden’s accomplishments, he believes that the president needs to reassess whether he is the best candidate to defeat Donald Trump in the upcoming election.

“For the good of the country, I’m calling on President Biden to withdraw from the race,” Welch wrote. “We cannot ignore the valid questions about his fitness for office. The stakes are too high.”

Welch’s call for Biden’s withdrawal comes as a growing number of Democrats are expressing doubts about the president’s ability to win reelection. In recent weeks, several prominent Democrats, including actor and Democratic donor George Clooney, have urged Biden to step aside and make way for a younger, more electable candidate.

The news of Welch’s op-ed has been met with mixed reactions from the Trump camp. While some are celebrating the apparent chaos within the Democratic party, others are urging caution, warning that Biden’s departure could pave the way for a more formidable opponent.

“I’m not sure if I should be happy or scared,” one Trump supporter tweeted. “On the one hand, Biden dropping out would be a major victory for our side. On the other hand, what if the Democrats replace him with someone even worse?”

As the Democrats scramble to pick up the pieces, it remains to be seen whether Biden will heed Welch’s call and withdraw from the race. For now, the president and his team remain defiant, insisting that he is the best candidate to defeat Trump in November.

“The president is staying in this race, and he’s going to win,” a Biden campaign spokesperson said in a statement. “The American people know that Joe Biden is the only candidate who can bring the country together and move us forward.”

Whether Biden’s confidence is well-founded remains to be seen. In the meantime, the Democrats’ internal struggles are providing plenty of fodder for Trump supporters, who are watching the drama unfold with a mix of amusement and concern.

“The Democrats are in complete disarray,” one Trump supporter wrote on social media. “If they can’t even decide on a candidate, how are they supposed to govern the country?”

As the 2024 election draws closer, the stakes have never been higher. With the future of the country hanging in the balance, the Democrats’ infighting could prove to be their undoing. Only time will tell if Biden will heed Welch’s call and step aside, or if he will continue to fight for his party’s nomination.
