OPINION| In a surprising turn of events, Democrat Congressman John Garamendi of California recently announced that he has been diagnosed with blood cancer. The 79-year-old representative, who has served in Congress since 2009, revealed his condition in a video posted on social media, stating that he received the dreaded call from his doctor informing him of the diagnosis.
Garamendi, who represents California’s 8th congressional district, which includes parts of Contra Costa and Solano counties, said he has early-stage multiple myeloma, a form of treatable blood cancer. He began treatment with chemotherapy and immunotherapy at Kaiser Oncology in Sacramento and expressed confidence in his doctors’ ability to help him achieve remission.
In his video, Garamendi showed remarkable strength and optimism, stating, “Like 1.9 million Americans each year, I recently received the dreaded call from my doctor informing me that I had cancer. I am thankful to have caught this early, and we are confident that I will soon be in remission.”
The congressman also took a moment to express gratitude for the support of his family, staff, and congressional colleagues, as well as for the advances in cancer research that have made effective treatments possible. He vowed to continue working on behalf of his constituents while undergoing treatment, although he will limit travel and public events to minimize exposure to COVID-19, the flu, and other viruses.
