OPINION| In a move that has sent shockwaves through the political landscape, President Joe Biden is reportedly set to announce a radical plan to overhaul the Supreme Court next week. This plan, which has been described as “sweeping” and “radical,” is expected to include a range of proposals aimed at reshaping the nation’s highest court.
But let’s take a step back and consider what’s really going on here. Is this a genuine effort to improve the judicial system, or is it simply a desperate attempt by Biden to score political points with his base?
First, let’s look at the timing of this announcement. With just a few months left until the midterm elections, Biden is clearly feeling the heat. His approval ratings are plummeting, and his party is facing the prospect of a shellacking at the polls. So what better way to rally the troops than by promising to shake up the Supreme Court?
But let’s not forget, this is the same Joe Biden who, just a few years ago, was singing a very different tune on the issue of court packing. Back in 2019, when asked about expanding the court, Biden said, “We’ll live to rue that day.” Now, suddenly, he’s all for it? It’s almost as if his principles are as flexible as his spine.
And let’s not overlook the fact that Biden is trying to ram through these changes without the consent of the American people. He knows that his radical proposals would never pass Congress, so he’s trying to circumvent the democratic process. This is not the behavior of a leader who respects the will of the people.
But perhaps the most troubling aspect of Biden’s plan is its blatant disregard for the Constitution. The Supreme Court has been a pillar of our democracy for over two centuries, and its independence and integrity are essential to the functioning of our system of government. By attempting to pack the court and impose term limits, Biden is undermining the very foundations of our republic.
From Politico:
“Biden is likely to endorse establishing term limits for justices and an enforceable code of ethics, in an announcement that represents a remarkable shift for a president who had long resisted calls to overhaul the high court.
He is also expected to push for a constitutional amendment limiting immunity for presidents and certain other officeholders, in a response to the court’s July 1 ruling that presidents are shielded from prosecution for “official acts” during their time in office, in a case brought by former President Donald Trump.
The specifics of the proposal remain unclear and could still change, said the people, who were granted anonymity to discuss internal planning.”
Now, I know what some of you might be thinking: “But Trump packed the court too!” And yes, it’s true that the former president appointed three justices during his term in office. But there’s a big difference between filling vacancies on the court and trying to fundamentally reshape it for political gain. Trump’s appointments were made in accordance with the Constitution, while Biden’s proposals are a blatant power grab.
So, as we await Biden’s announcement next week, let’s remember what’s at stake here. This is not just about the Supreme Court; it’s about the very future of our democracy. We must stand firm against these radical proposals and defend the Constitution against those who would seek to undermine it.
In the end, Biden’s SCOTUS shakeup is nothing more than a desperate Hail Mary by a president who is out of touch with the American people. It’s a cynical ploy to rally his base and distract from his failures. But we must not be fooled. We must stand together and say, “No more!” The future of our nation depends on it.
