It is with heavy hearts that we report the passing of Mike Brumley, a former Major League Baseball infielder and highly respected coach, who tragically lost his life in a car accident at the age of 61. The news of his untimely death has left the baseball community and fans around the world mourning the loss of a remarkable individual whose impact extended far beyond the field.
Mike Brumley’s journey in professional baseball began in 1987 when he made his debut with the Chicago Cubs. Over the course of his eight-year career, he played for six different teams, including the Detroit Tigers, Seattle Mariners, Boston Red Sox, Houston Astros, and Oakland Athletics. Although his playing career was relatively brief, his passion for the game and dedication to his craft left an indelible mark on those who had the privilege of knowing him.
After retiring from playing, Brumley transitioned into coaching, where he continued to share his wealth of knowledge and expertise with aspiring players. He served as a coach and hitting instructor for several teams, including the Mariners, Cubs, Texas Rangers, and Los Angeles Dodgers. Most recently, he worked as a minor league coach and hitting instructor with the Atlanta Braves from 2018 to 2022.

Brumley’s impact on the game was profound, and his loss is deeply felt by those who had the opportunity to work with him. Atlanta Braves third baseman Austin Riley, who had a close relationship with Brumley, spoke highly of his mentor, saying, “Mike Brumley was a great man and an even better coach. He had a way of making you feel like you could conquer the world, and he always believed in me. I’ll miss him dearly.”
In addition to his contributions to the sport, Brumley was known for his compassion and kindness. He was a devoted family man who cherished his wife and children. He was also actively involved in various charitable organizations and was passionate about giving back to the community.
