Ilhan Omar Slips Up & Admits She Doesn’t Even Know What ‘Memorial Day’ Is

Reps. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., and Cori Bush, D-Mo., faced backlash for mixing up Memorial Day with Veterans Day in posts on X, previously known as Twitter.
Both “Squad” members posted messages on Monday, the day dedicated to honoring and mourning U.S. military personnel who died in service.

Omar wrote, “On Memorial Day, we honor the heroic men and women who served our country,” adding that they “have more than earned access to quality mental health services, job opportunities, housing assistance, and the benefits they were promised.”
Bush’s post echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the need for “universal healthcare, affordable housing, comprehensive mental health services, and educational and economic opportunities for our veterans.”

Social media users quickly pointed out the confusion between Memorial Day, which honors those who died in service, and Veterans Day, which celebrates living military veterans. Critics noted that the congresswomen’s messages seemed to indicate they were mixing up the two holidays.
“Ilhan Omar misunderstanding Memorial Day is incredibly on brand,” posted John Hasson of Townhall, while OutKick’s David Hookstead wrote, “Ilhan Omar thinks Memorial Day is about celebrating people who are alive. Beyond parody.”
Political commentator Ian Miles Cheong questioned, “Ilhan Omar and Cori Bush have confused Memorial Day for Veterans Day. Where’s AOC?”

Ryan Saavedra also pointed out the confusion, stating that Memorial Day “is for honoring those who have died while serving in the U.S. military” and that Veterans Day is for “everyone who has served in the U.S. Military.”
Both Omar and Bush deleted their posts within a few hours of posting.
