A politically connected jeweler kidnapped in Culiacán, Sinaloa, this week was released unharmed after roughly 48 hours in captivity, but Mexican authorities have offered no public explanation of what happened or why the case drew such an unusually large security response.
Luis Mario Zuniga, 49, who holds both Mexican and U.S. citizenship, owns a chain of jewelry stores in the region. He was abducted by a group of gunmen earlier this week, according to local news outlets. During his captivity, federal and state security forces launched a large-scale operation to locate and rescue him.
That response has stirred anger among residents of Sinaloa, a state that has endured a sharp rise in violence, shootouts, murders and kidnappings in recent years, most of which have not triggered a comparable law enforcement effort.
A Cartel Connection?
The heightened attention to Zuniga’s case comes amid an ongoing turf war between rival factions of the Sinaloa Cartel, known as Los Chapitos and Los Mayos, which has driven much of the bloodshed across the state.
Social media posts circulated by Mexican news outlets showed that Zuniga’s jewelry business, LM Ramos, had previously posted images of a custom-made mouse pendant. The mouse, or “El Ratón,” is the nickname of Ovidio Guzmán, a leader of Los Chapitos. Guzmán became widely known in Mexico after his first capture, when then-President Andrés Manuel López Obrador ordered his release rather than risk further violence with cartel forces. He was later arrested again and extradited to the United States, where he faces drug trafficking charges.
Unconfirmed reports from Mexican commentators and outlets including Infobae.com suggest Zuniga may be related to the husband of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. Those claims have not been officially confirmed.
As of now, neither federal nor state authorities have publicly detailed the circumstances of Zuniga’s abduction, the identity of his captors, or the reasoning behind the scale of the operation mounted to secure his release.
