At the red carpet premiere of the new film “Madden,” reporters put one question to the cast that seemed unavoidable given the subject matter: has anyone eaten a turducken, the chicken-stuffed-in-a-duck-stuffed-in-a-turkey dish that broadcaster John Madden famously carved on air every Thanksgiving?
Christian Bale, who plays former Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis in the movie, did not directly answer whether he had tried one but weighed in on food safety around the dish instead.
Nicolas Cage, who portrays Madden himself, also sidestepped a direct yes-or-no but said he got turducken all over his hands while chopping one up on camera in a style meant to mirror Madden’s own carving.
Super Bowl champion Julian Edelman, who attended the premiere, said he has never had turducken but has long wanted to try one of the kind Madden used to dig into by hand on Thanksgiving broadcasts.
Sienna Miller, who plays Carol Sagal Davis in the film, confirmed she has actually eaten turducken. She said she and co-star Kathryn Hahn, who plays Virginia Madden, shared a backup turducken that was on set.
“Madden” is set for release and chronicles the life of the Hall of Fame coach and broadcaster, whose on-air Thanksgiving turducken carvings became an annual tradition during his years calling NFL games.
