President Trump told “60 Minutes” he believes he can cooperate with Democrats without resorting to insults, though he undercut the point moments later by using a derogatory nickname for the party during the same exchange.
In a preview of his Sunday interview, correspondent Ross Douthat asked Trump about working with the opposition after the midterms, raising the case of Texas Democrat James Talarico, who won election to the U.S. Senate and has said he is interested in working with Trump on immigration. Douthat noted Trump had previously nicknamed Talarico “TalaFreako,” which Trump confirmed.
“Do you think you could work with the Democrats without insulting them consistently?” Douthat asked.
“Yeah, I do,” Trump said. “Sure I could. I also call many of them ‘dumocrats’ because their policies are bad.”
Douthat followed up: “If it took six months of not insulting the Democrats to get a deal done, do you think you could do it?”
The full exchange is set to air Sunday on “60 Minutes.”
Talarico’s response
Talarico, the incoming Democratic senator from Texas, has signaled openness to working with Trump on select issues. In an interview earlier this week, he said: “I would love, as the next U.S. senator from Texas, to work with Donald Trump to actually fulfill some of the promises of his political project. Because the promise of MAGA was that we were going to transform this government so that it delivered for the people who have been left behind, the people who have been forgotten in this country.”
Talarico has also said he agrees with Trump on securing the border and on cutting regulatory barriers to housing construction.
