Flu season is arriving earlier and more intensely than it did last year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Flu activity is growing or likely growing in 39 states, and the national test positivity rate climbed to 7.6% for the week ending October 28.
That figure stands in sharp contrast to the same point last year, when flu test positivity had not even reached 1%, the CDC reported.
The early surge has prompted consumer advice outlets to recommend stocking up on cold-and-flu supplies before the holiday shopping season, including over-the-counter remedies, vitamin C supplements, and rapid COVID-19 and flu tests.
Among the items drawing attention is a throat spray product, Beekeeper’s Naturals Propolis Throat Spray, which retails for about $13 and is marketed as containing propolis from wildflower honeybees. The manufacturer says the formula includes more than 300 compounds, including flavonoids and polyphenols, which it markets as supporting immune function and soothing sore throats.
As with any over-the-counter supplement, health officials generally advise consulting a physician before use, particularly for people with preexisting medical conditions.
Health authorities continue to monitor the season’s trajectory, with the sharp jump in positivity rates suggesting this year’s flu season could peak earlier than in recent years.
