Streamer Hasan Piker Sues CNN’s Scott Jennings for $72.5 Million Over Lynching Claims

Streamer Hasan Piker has sued CNN contributor Scott Jennings for at least $72.5 million, alleging Jennings fabricated a quote and edited footage to falsely accuse him of supporting the lynching of Black Americans.

Left-leaning streamer Hasan Piker filed a defamation lawsuit Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia against conservative commentator Scott Jennings, seeking at least $72.5 million in damages over claims that Piker supported the lynching of Black Americans.

The complaint, filed October 27, seeks a minimum of $27.5 million in compensatory damages and $45 million in punitive damages. Piker has requested a jury trial.

At issue is an August 11 episode of The Scott Jennings Show and related posts on social media. Piker’s lawsuit alleges that Jennings relied on edited footage from Piker’s livestreams and inserted a quotation Piker never said, then used the material to claim Piker backed racial violence.

The complaint quotes Piker’s legal team directly:

Mr. Jennings did not merely mischaracterize something Mr. Piker said. He took a false, fabricated, and manipulated video of Mr. Piker, added a made-up quotation that Mr. Piker never uttered, and then made accusations that went beyond even what the manipulated footage purported to show. Mr. Jennings presented those accusations as fact, telling his viewers to “[l]isten for yourself” about Mr. Piker, knowing that he was playing a falsified video of Mr. Piker for those viewers, and completely disregarding the truth of Mr. Piker’s actual words.

The distinction matters. Mr. Jennings was free to criticize Mr. Piker, to condemn his political positions, or to argue that his commentary was offensive. Mr. Jennings was also free to play Mr. Piker’s actual words, and provide his own commentary on what Mr. Piker actually said. Mr. Jennings was not free to do what he did: knowingly attribute to Mr. Piker statements that Mr. Piker never made, and then present those invented statements as evidence that Mr. Piker supports the racially motivated murder of Black Americans.

The underlying dispute traces back to an October 29, 2024, Twitch broadcast in which Piker watched two Black political commentators debate criminal justice policy. According to the filing, Piker sarcastically mocked the conservative participant’s criticism of “woke DAs” by portraying him as nostalgic for the era before the civil rights movement. Piker’s lawyers argue that the surrounding discussion, laughter and audience reaction made clear he was criticizing those views, not endorsing them.

The lawsuit says a roughly 42-second compilation later spliced together clips from three separate broadcasts, rearranging remarks and stripping away context. Jennings aired that compilation with an on-screen caption attributing the statement “LET’S GO BACK TO A BETTER TIME WHEN LYNCHINGS WERE HAPPENING” to Piker.

Piker’s attorneys say that line appears in neither the original recording nor the edited compilation, and that Jennings converted a sarcastic question into a flat declarative statement.

Following the broadcast, Jennings accused Piker of “calling for Black voters to be lynched” and referenced “the Piker plan of returning our country to lynchings,” according to the complaint. The lawsuit says Jennings repeated the claims in subsequent online posts, including one on X that had drawn roughly 2.5 million views by the time the suit was filed.

Piker’s filing claims he suffered reputational harm, lost business opportunities and emotional distress as a result. His attorneys say they sent a retraction demand on August 31 and received an acknowledgment from Jennings’ attorney but no substantive response.

The complaint includes claims of defamation per se, defamation by implication as an alternative theory, and false light invasion of privacy. Jennings, a CNN contributor and radio host, is named as the sole defendant in the case.
