A Forsyth man says he was served a cheaper cut of steak instead of the filet mignon he paid for at the local Texas Roadhouse, an experience he says happened three times before he decided to speak out.
Kenneth Card posted a video to TikTok in early October describing what he says were repeated mix-ups at the Texas Roadhouse location in Forsyth, McLean County. The video has drawn more than 30,000 views.
Card told Fox News Digital he has worked in hotel and restaurant kitchens preparing and cutting steaks, giving him confidence in his ability to tell cuts apart.
“I know what types of meat I get whenever I receive it,” Card said.
Card said he has visited the restaurant about once a week for over a year and had developed a rapport with staff there. The first time he suspected he’d been given the wrong steak, he flagged it and was given a filet. The next visit, he ate the steak without complaint. But when he ordered filet mignon a third time and again believed he’d been served something else, he brought it up with a manager.
“I was like, ‘Look, this is the third time that y’all tried to sell me a sirloin or whatever else kind of steak it is besides a filet,'” Card recalled.
According to Card, the restaurant took the steak back for a second opinion and staff confirmed it was not what he had ordered. He waited for a replacement, asked for it to go, and posted his video once he got home.
“I just wanted to get the word out that, ‘Hey, you’re getting ripped off if you’re ordering this, and they’re selling you this,'” Card said.
At the Forsyth location, an 8-ounce sirloin runs about $20, according to the restaurant’s website, compared with about $30 for the filet mignon.
Card said he was surprised by how much attention the video received and said his goal was simply to make sure customers get what they pay for. Reaction online was mixed, with some commenters suggesting the issue was isolated to the one location and others admitting they likely wouldn’t notice a difference between the cuts.
“For those of us who don’t know the difference, they would get by with that,” one commenter wrote. “Fortunately, you happen to know the difference.”
Card described the texture difference bluntly: a filet “melts in your mouth” and is “very tender,” he said, while the sirloin is “a little grittier, a little chewier.”
Texas Roadhouse told Fox News Digital it is aware of Card’s post and looked into the claims. The company confirmed one instance in which the order was mixed up and said management corrected it on the spot by providing Card with a filet. A spokesperson said the company has “not been able to track that this occurred on three occasions,” but confirmed the single mix-up was resolved at the time.
The company said team members double-check food for quality and accuracy as it leaves the kitchen, and it encouraged customers who believe they received the wrong order to alert their server immediately so restaurant staff can address it.
Card said he doesn’t plan on returning to the Forsyth restaurant. “I think I’m done going in there,” he said. “I’ll try somewhere else.”
