The man identified as the armed bystander who killed the attacker at Silver Rail Elementary School called his mother in the aftermath and told her what had happened, according to an account she gave CBS News.
Kaylub Giamanco, 36, is the father of two daughters who attend the school. Police had initially described the person who stopped the attacker only as a “bystander” before he was identified as Giamanco.
His mother, Kenda Freeman, told CBS News that her son called her and said, “Mom, I just shot and killed somebody.” She responded, “Kaylub, tell me about it.”
Giamanco then described the encounter to her in detail. “A man went into my daughters’ school and shot kids and I looked at him point-blank, and I shot and killed him, Mom,” he told her, according to Freeman.
Freeman said her son sensed something was wrong before he acted. “Kaylub knew something was not right, so he pulled up onto the grass, grabbed his gun and basically stalked the gunman back into the school,” she said.
She added that he entered the building through an opening the attacker had created. “He crawled through a window that the gunman had shot out. He army-crawled through the window,” Freeman said.
The attacker has been described as a 16-year-old who used a pump shotgun that his mother had given him as a birthday gift. He killed four people and still had dozens of rounds of ammunition on him when Giamanco shot and killed him.
Freeman told CBS LA how she responded to her son’s actions. “I told him he was a hero, he did what he had to do, and that he did the right thing, and that I was proud of him and that he was a hero and he saved a lot of lives,” she said.
