Week 7 of the 2026 college football season produced one of the most chaotic stretches in recent memory, with five Top 10 teams losing games and every single team in the Associated Press Top 25 shifting position from the week before.
Miami has taken over the No. 1 ranking, followed by BYU at No. 2 and Ohio State at No. 3. It is the first time this season that no team in the poll held its previous spot, reflecting the scale of the weekend’s upheaval.
The Hurricanes needed double overtime to beat Florida State at home, 43-35, to reach the top spot, though Miami has not yet played a ranked opponent this season. BYU, meanwhile, moved to 6-0 on the year with a 28-24 win over then-No. 2 Notre Dame, and received 20 first-place votes compared to Miami’s 40 in this week’s balloting.
The biggest riser in the poll is Florida, which jumped 12 spots to No. 20. The team Florida beat, Texas, suffered the steepest fall, dropping from No. 7 to No. 19 after its second consecutive loss.
SEC and Big 12 Storylines
Kentucky stands out among the nine SEC teams ranked this week. The Wildcats improved to 6-1 with a road win at Oklahoma, their third conference road victory of the season, and now sit at No. 12 under first-year head coach Will Stein. Some observers argue Kentucky has a case to be ranked even higher.
Elsewhere in the SEC, five teams in this week’s Top 25 carry two losses, and all five belong to that conference.
The Big 12 is also making noise, placing four teams in the Top 15: BYU at No. 2, Texas Tech at No. 8, Utah at No. 10, and Houston at No. 14. Houston travels to Utah this coming Saturday in a matchup with potential College Football Playoff implications.
