Venezuelan composer and pianist Gus Ormo was found dead Saturday morning, bound and submerged at the bottom of the pool behind his home in Weston, in what Broward County Sheriff’s Office officials are calling a “suspicious incident.”
Deputies responded to a 911 call placed around 9 a.m. after someone reported a man who had been “tied up” and possibly drowned in a backyard pool. Ormo was pronounced dead at the scene.
Aerial video from local station WPLG Local 10 showed a long blue cord tangled on Ormo’s patio, leading into the pool where his body was found.
Homicide and crime scene unit detectives are now investigating, according to Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Gerdy St. Louis. Ormo’s body was transported to the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office, where a cause of death is still being determined.
Ormo’s sister, Antonieta Ormo, confirmed his death to CBS News Miami but said the family has not been given further details about what happened.
Neighbors in the gated Weston community described Ormo as someone who kept to himself and said they were stunned by news of his death.
“It’s sad what happened, and it wasn’t something I expected to happen in Weston,” neighbor Bruno Gedikinan told NBC 6.
“It’s weird to happen. It’s not normal, of course,” another neighbor, Mariano Cascata, said.
Ormo, a piano virtuoso and singer known for his romantic compositions, had recently been promoting his latest album, AGAPE, a piano instrumental record described in an October press release as a “milestone in his career.”
“Gus Ormo has always been a sensitive person. He recalls how, as a child, he would listen to records and feel music stirring his deepest emotions,” the release stated.
No further details about the investigation have been released. The Broward County Sheriff’s Office has not announced any suspects or persons of interest.
