Kai Trump, a freshman on the University of Miami women’s golf team, has undergone a second surgery on her wrist, putting her first collegiate season on hold.
Trump, the granddaughter of President Donald Trump, announced the operation in an Instagram post Wednesday, sharing a photo of herself in a hospital bed with her arm in a sling and cast. The procedure was performed at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York.
The 19-year-old had injured the wrist during her first college tournament in September, a three-round event in Muncie, Indiana, that included a day with two rounds of play. The wrist had been a recurring issue; Trump had surgery on the same wrist in January to address what she described at the time as injuries to the stabilizing tissues of her ECU tendon and damage to her triangular fibrocartilage complex.
In her latest post, Trump said she weighed the decision carefully before going forward with another operation.
“While I had hoped to avoid surgery, after talks with my family, coaches, and athletic training staff I know I made the best decision for my long-term health and my future in the game I love,” Trump wrote. “It’s certainly not how I envisioned the next few months, but sometimes the journey takes an unexpected turn, and I’m choosing to embrace this one with patience, and a whole lot of determination.”
Trump did not give a timetable for her recovery but thanked Dr. Michelle G. Carlson, a hand and upper extremity specialist, along with her teammates, coaches and family for their support.
“Recovery will take time, but I’m incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by amazing people who continue to lift me up, encourage me, and remind me that every challenge is an opportunity to grow,” she wrote. “Having the right people by your side makes all the difference, and I couldn’t be more grateful. For now, it’s all about healing, and trusting the process. I can’t wait to be back with my team, doing what I love. I’ll be back before you know it, stronger and more grateful than ever! Go Canes!”
